RFID Q & A

  What is RFID ?
RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification and will take libraries 'beyond the barcode' in the key areas of checking in / out materials, stock management and security.

Each library item will contain a small RFID tag which will eventually replace both the barcode for identification and the tattle tape for security.

The beauty of RFID is that you don't need 'line of sight' to identify the book so can be scanned without needing to open the book. Multiple items can be issued / returned simultaneously.

The RFID tags contain a small computer chip which can store information to uniquely identify the book and the library/branch who owns it and, unlike a barcode, can be written to and updated over time.

  How does RFID work ?
Unlike barcodes where the laser scanner must be directly over the barcode to read it, RFID uses radio waves which can pass through the book so can read the tag while the book is closed.

The pad on which the book sits during the tagging/issue/return stage is an RFID antenna and is connected to a reader/writer. This antenna/transmitter produces a radio frequency field which effectively powers up the tag and it transmits back its contents (usually the unique accession number among other information).

This data is then fed back to the ELiMS software and onto the library management system.

ELiMS links to many major library management systems and will easily connect to any unapproved system which supports the industry standard SIP 2 protocol (and most do) or NCIP standards. SIP 2 basically is an approved set of instructions that allow many external systems to talk to the LMS for issues / borrower id confirmation etc.

There are several different sizes of tags each designed for a different type of media including books, video cassettes and CD's.

What benefits does ELiMS & RFID bring to my library ?
- Full self-service capability. Customers can perform their own mass borrowing / returning 24x7 (with the smart dispenser / bookdrop). Increased speed of issue / returns. Smaller (or eliminated) queues. User friendly with a single interface for issue and return.

- Gives a genuine chance to rethink the layout of the library. No longer is a large issue counter a necessity. This can be replaced by self-issue stations and smaller customer help / information points.

- The librarians can 'emerge from behind the counter' and become more customer focused, doing what librarians do and enjoy best, helping the public.

- Linked to the above point there are proven statistics on improved customer satisfaction and increased loan rates.

- Libraries are able to handle much higher transaction rates with the same staff strength. Helps towards the Gershon efficiency targets.

- Improved inventory management. Easier and quicker tools for stock taking, weeding and location of titles.

- Ease of sorting returned books. Quick identification of the owning library or stock area. Can be sorted manually or auto-sorted.

- Theft reduction. RFID security gates are proven to pick up over 90% of armed tags as opposed to 70-80% for EM security systems. Also much harder to disarm the tags than demagnetise the strips.

- WOW factor. RFID is 'state of the art' and the library world is leading the way for many industries on the use of this technology.

- Real-time monitoring of library activity from customer counts on the doors through to issue counts etc. Extensive reporting capabilities from the Admin Station.

- Our products are scaleable and modular to allow easier expansion. Can seamlessly build from an initial small implementation.

- ELiMS can display all the on screen instructions and messages in up to 6 languages. Ideal for areas of high ethnic diversity.

  Who are our partners ?

We have partnered with ST LogiTrack, an established technology house from Singapore which is part owned by the Singapore government. They boast the implementation of the first 13.56Mhz RFID based library systems for the National Library of Singapore back in 1998.

They now have over 100 sites spread across the Far and Middle East including Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Taiwan, China, Korea, India, Brunei, Qatar and have made large inroads into the Australian market.

Holt Jackson and a French collaborator are their latest partners as we work together to bring the success story of ELiMS to Western Europe.

Their suite of RFID technologies is grouped under the banner of ELiMS (Electronic Library Management System) and their slogan is 'Creative RFID Solutions'. In keeping with this they are always looking for new and innovative uses of RFID in libraries.
